Being born in Halifax, Wainhouse Tower has always held a special place in my heart. As a child, the tower facinated me and I climbed it many times during the bank holidays. Wherever you are in Halifax, it is likely that you'll be able to see the tower dominating the landscape as it has for the past 130 years. Myself and locals alike share an affinity with the tower and we are proud that our town can boast such a magnificant structure.
I am a great fan of Victorian architecture and especially, the techniques used to build and create such intricate works of stone. For many years, the tower was open on public holidays. Visitors to the tower could climb the 403 steps and be rewarded with magnificent views from the top. Sadly, over the years the tower suffered neglect and succumbed to the elements leaving costly repair works needed. The tower was closed to the public in 2005 and it is now under repair following a lengthy campaign.
I was deeply saddened by the state of the tower and decided that this website would be a good place where I could promote its cause whilst providing a full history of the tower including all other architectural works instigated by Mr John Edward Wainhouse.
Please feel free to browse my website, I hope you find it interesting. I would be very grateful for any information and photographs which you may have that I could include on this site. I feel very strongly that works of Wainhouse should be recognised and should be preserved as such. Please contact me at benpearce@worksofwainhouse.info if you have any additions you may like to make.
Best Wishes
